Let Them Cook! — Opening Day Chef Competition

Let Them Cook! kicks off the Durango Farmers Market season with a high-energy, community-forward chef competition held on Opening Day and the first 2nd Saturdays on Main of the year.

Local chefs are paired with student sous-chefs from and compete live using seasonal ingredients sourced directly from market vendors. Ingredients are preordered and prepaid to ensure a smooth, equitable competition that keeps the focus on creativity, mentorship, and local food.

This is a demonstration-style competition—attendees watch the cooking and judging live, but no food is served from the competition itself.

Together, these programs strengthen connections between farmers, chefs, students, and the broader community while supporting vibrant, accessible downtown events throughout the season.

What Your Ticket Supports

  • Chef stipends issued in Durango Farmers Market tokens, ensuring funds circulate directly back to local farmers and producers

  • Market-sourced ingredients used during the competition

Event Details

  • Date: May 9, 2026

  • Time: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM

  • Location: Main Avenue, 1100 Block (within the 2nd Saturdays on Main footprint)

  • Tickets: $10 for access to the chef competition viewing area

  • Market access: The Durango Farmers Market remains free and open to all

  • Movement: Ticketed attendees may move freely between the market, food court, and competition area

  • Food: Competition food is for judging only; the market food court will be open, and food may be brought into the viewing area

  • Open container: An open container area will be available within the ticketed viewing area in accordance with City regulations

  • Raffles: Raffles will take place throughout the event

    • Earn raffle tickets by signing up for our Sustainable Membership Program, launching Opening Day

  • Live music: Enjoy live music during the event from Sharon and the Boots

  • Seating: Limited seating; standing room encouraged

  • Weather: Outdoor event, rain or shine
